<image:title>What is MSC? - What is Mindful Self-Compassion?</image:title>
<image:caption>Mindful Self-Compassion (MSC) is an empirically-supported meditation program created by Kristin Neff, PhD, pioneering researcher in the field of self-compassion, and Christopher Germer, PhD, leader in the integration of mindfulness and psychotherapy. MSC is the first meditation program designed specifically to cultivate the inner resource of self-compassion. In MSC, participants learn core principles and practices that enable them to respond to difficult moments in their lives with greater kindness and understanding. The course includes guided meditations, short talks, experiential exercises, group discussion, and take-home practices to integrate self-compassion into everyday life. MSC is taught by certified teachers all over the world, and is now available here in Santa Barbara with Hattie Bluestone, DPT Anahita Holden, PhD.</image:caption>

<image:title>What is MSC? - Why take the MSC course?</image:title>
<image:caption>Over the last couple decades there has been an explosion of research on the benefits of self-compassion. Self-compassion is associated with less anxiety, depression, stress, and negative body image — and associated with greater happiness, life satisfaction, motivation, relationships, and physical health. Self-compassion is a powerful factor in emotional well-being and resilience, but it’s also something that many of us struggle with. Mindful Self-Compassion was created as a training program specifically to enhance one’s capacity for self-compassion during difficult moments. And it works! There have been 4 randomized-controlled trials on the Mindful Self-Compassion course. This research indicates that participating in the program produces long-lasting decreases in anxiety and depression and increases in mindfulness, compassion for self, compassion for others, and social connectedness. The 8-week course even stabilized blood glucose levels among participants with diabetes.</image:caption>
